The Gokyo Lakes Trek in the Everest Region is a hidden treasure with stunning scenery, cozy tea houses, and fewer crowds than the classic Everest Base Camp Trek. During the hike, you can enjoy sights of Mount Everest (8,848m), Cho Oyu (8,188m), the Ngozumpa Glacier (the longest in the Himalayas), and five stunning lakes. The adventure begins upon arrival in Kathmandu, followed by a flight to Lukla the next day to start the trek.
As you ascend towards Namche, the biggest Sherpa village in the area, you will traverse a number of breathtaking suspension bridges. From Namche onwards, the trail branches off from the main route leading towards Everest Base Camp. The path to Gokyo tracks the Dudh Koshi River back to its origin at the end of the Ngozumpa Glacier. Experience two days at the Gokyo Lakes exploring Gokyo Ri (5,357m) and Gokyo’s 5th Lake, providing stunning views of both Everest and Cho Oyu. Once we finish exploring the Gokyo Region, we will descend to Namche and Lukla before taking a flight to Kathmandu.

Today is the day of your Gokyo Lake Trek. You will be driven early in the morning to the domestic wing of Kathmandu Airport and start your journey towards Lukla from where the real trek begins. The trail up to Phakding is a gentle one; hence, it serves for acclimatization before you get into more difficult stretches of the trek.
Flights to Lukla are currently operated from Ramechhap due to upgrading work at Kathmandu Airport. You will need to leave Kathmandu at 2 AM to connect to Ramechhap in time for your flight.
After a scenic drive to Ramechhap, you take a small plane for the electrifying flight to Lukla. The flight offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas, which include Mt. Everest and other renowned peaks.
Upon your arrival in Lukla, otherwise referred to as the ‘Gateway to Everest,’ you will be met with your guide and porter. Following a brief acclimatization break, you will begin a rather easy trek to Phakding. The trail follows behind the Dudh Koshi River, with magnificent mountain views unfolding around.
Phakding is a beautiful Sherpa village where you will overnight. You will have time to explore the village, interact with its people, and take in the mountain atmosphere.
Stopping your first night at Phakding (2,652m/8,700ft) allows your body to start acclimatizing to the higher altitude. Keep yourself well-hydrated, rest well, and most importantly, listen to your body.
The next day, you will continue your journey to Namche Bazaar, the Gateway to Everest.
Day 3: Phakding to Namche Bazaar – Gateway to the Everest Region
Today, a little more challenging trek will take you upwards to Namche Bazaar, the hub of the Everest region.
You will have a good breakfast at Phakding before you finally leave the village. Now, you follow the Dudh Koshi River. The path from here is comparatively plain and leads through luxuriant forests with some villages.
You will cross the Dudh Koshi River via a suspension bridge, offering exquisite views of the river and the surrounding mountains. The trail further ascends to Monjo and goes uphill gradually.
You enter the Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo, which is the home of majestically towering Mount Everest. You have to show your park permit at the entrance.
This final slog pushes you up a steeper incline to Namche Bazaar. The trail winds its way through terraced fields and offers breathtaking views of the mountains in the surroundings. You will also have your first views of Mount Everest, together with some other iconic peaks.
Finally, you will come upon Namche Bazaar, a busy Sherpa town and the entrance point for the Everest Base Camp trek. The town caters to almost all needs by offering all sorts of shops, restaurants, and accommodations. It’s time to get out and enjoy the colorful atmosphere but also to acclimatize to the higher altitude.
Spend the night in the Guest House at Namche Bazaar among other trekkers and the peculiar ambience of this mountain town. The next day will be a rest day to further acclimate before you begin to push higher.
Remember to take it easy and to listen to your body as it adjusts to the gain in altitude.
Day 4: Namche Bazaar Acclimatization Day
Today is a vital day for acclimatization in the higher altitude of Namche Bazaar. Time is spent resting, but it’s also alive with opportunities to experience the rich Sherpa culture and breathtaking mountain scenery.
The day at Namche Bazaar allows the body to acclimatize to higher altitude, consequently reducing the chances of suffering altitude sickness. Of course, rest is necessary; however, you shall be free to perform some light activities that will help your body get accustomed to the higher altitudes.
Namche Bazaar offers a different opportunity to acclimatize to the Sherpas’ culture. Visit the Sherpa Museum to learn about the Sherpas, their history and customs. You can also spend some time at the local market, where you will find various handicrafts and souvenirs, as well as many local products.
For those who want a shorter walk, the Everest View Hotel has spectacular views over the Khumbu Valley. This uphill walk will help in acclimatization and gives a panoramic view of Mount Everest along with other Himalayan giants.
Spend the remaining part of the day at the guesthouse, just relaxing and enjoying the local cuisine while sharing stories with fellow trekkers. Don’t forget to drink tons of liquids and not sweat too much.
The next day, you’ll continue upwards to Tengboche, the next destination of some importance on the Everest Base Camp trek.
Well, enjoy Namche Bazaar and make the most of this acclimatization day.
Day 5: Namche Bazaar to Dole – Higher Ground

It’s a slow pace today to allow your body further acclimatization with higher altitudes. Just take it easy, look around, and listen to your body.

After a good breakfast, you’ll leave the Machermo and start your climb up to the Gokyo Lakes. The trail undulates on the western side along the powerful torrent of the Dudh Koshi fed by the Ngozumpa Glacier. Rocky country and glacial debris give way to the sense of adventure.
Again, now you continue to climb up gradually to the first of the Gokyo Lakes. The turquoise color of the lake with a landscape of snow-capped mountains in the backdrop creates a wonderful scene. You can either camp around the area of the first lake or explore the other lakes.

You could do a hike to the second, third, fourth, or even the fifth lake, depending on your energy levels and acclimatization. Each lake offers another view of surroundings, mountains, and glaciers.
This day hike around the lakes will be with beautiful surroundings. Turquoise water color contrasts in the lakes against the snow-capped peaks make it absolutely magical. Take it easy to have peace of mind and security to enjoy the beauty of the scenery and take unforgettable photos.

The landscape changes gradually as you descend. You will go through the rhododendron forests and pass by traditional Sherpa settlements. The path has a mix of ups and downs but surely is downwards.
You shall cross the day by trekking for several hours to reach Dole, quite a familiar overnight campfall during your journey. Log into your guest house and soak into the comfortable mountain village atmosphere.

Next morning, after a good breakfast, you’ll leave Dole and start the drop down to Namche Bazaar. There’s some of that same route you took on the way up, so the mountain views are just as nice, but from a different vantage point.
The trail goes via villages with terraced fields, with views of the locals going about their day-to-day lives, then further down along the Dudh Koshi River to make for a beautiful outlook on the journey. Descend to Namche again after a few hours’ walk. Spend the rest of the day at leisure strolling around town, visiting shops, or relaxing at your guest house.
